In the new horror film “Sinister,” Ethan Hawke plays a true-crime novelist who, in researching a family’s mysterious murder, unleashes a malevolent pagan deity on his own. Audiences should find it believable enough — Hawke has spent his career establishing a reputation as a multi-hypenate, an actor/author/author-actor who acts for authors and authors for actors.
